Most insightful critique i've read on the Kony 2012 issue - by Angelo Izama, a Ugandan journalist
“Campaigns like “Kony 2012” aspire to frame the debate about these criminals and inspire action to stop them. Instead, they simply conscript our outrage to advance a specific political agenda — in this case, increased military action.”
“Killing [capturing] Mr. Kony may remove him from the battlefield but it will not cure the conditions that have allowed him to thrive for so long.”

“We don’t want to be the PAWN of anybody” Trade and investment does not have to equate to neocolonialism. Should we assert for ourselves what we require in return from foreign investment and ensure that it is mutually beneficial for our NATIONS (and not for a few pockets) then the surge of Chinese interest in Africa does not have to be detrimental to our growth and independence.
On the Kony 2012 Campaign
The Kony Campaign is important because it is truly making waves in spreading awareness about a deadly, and extremely devastating conflict. But UNDERSTANDING and INFORMED ACTIVISM is even of more importance - INFORMED ACTIVISM IS OF pivotal importance.
I am truly glad that so many people are becoming interested in this conflict and responding out of concern and compassion and because we realize that the onus is on us to ensure that the atrocities of the past aren’t continued. BUT the conflict in Central Africa is complicated and while Kony needs to be brought to justice for his deplorable crimes, I would reckon that given the conflict’s level of complexity, Kony is not the ONLY ONE who needs to be stopped. There are other “bad guys” and one-sided intervention will not achieve sustainable peace.
The very military that is being called to be armed has committed crimes against the people in Northern Uganda and elsewhere in the Great Lakes Region. There are deep seated issues embedded within this conflict. The campaign video states that the LRA fights for no real purpose but to maintain power. However, study of the history of the conflict and Museveni’s repressive policies in Northern Uganda refutes that statement.
A lot of information, that is necessary in helping all of us who are waking up to the realities of this conflict make informed decisions, is missing. SO ..
Let’s raise awareness about the conflict and contribute our quota to bringing it to an end - let’s definitely work towards stopping Kony but let’s ensure our efforts aren’t one sided and incomplete. We all need to read, research and find out what would be the MOST effective way to make a contribution - it can’t end with merely passing on a link, or learning about this conflict from one source.
